Taylor Russell McKenzie’s Journey from Adversity to Reinvention

Born on July 18, 1994, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Taylor Russell McKenzie grew up in those cities as well as Toronto and Montreal. Russell, who had a black father and a white mother, spent most of her childhood among the latter group.

She recalls being bullied because of the hue of her skin when she was little. Her family uprooted a total of sixteen times due to her father’s job requirements and the financial difficulties they caused for her parents. Russell, despite this struggle, said of how in her earlier years “there was always an opportunity for reinvention, to create something new.”

Russell had an interest in the arts from a young age; she considered a career in dancing before switching her sights to painting. When she was eighteen, she decided to try out for the school’s performing troupe. She bought a car with the money she had saved from her job and drove to Los Angeles every week to try out for roles.

She would go to auditions until her funds ran out, at which point she would return home to work. For four years, she followed this regimen until she was cast in her first significant television role.
