What Was Shelton’s Father’s Role in His Tennis Career?
Shelton preferred to play American football instead of tennis as a child. Despite the fact that both of his parents were involved in tennis, they never put any pressure on him to play. Shelton’s father, Bryan a collegiate tennis coach started coaching him when he was 12 years old and he started playing tennis frequently.
Shelton thought about competing in ITF Junior tournaments abroad when he was 16 years old, but his father strongly advised him against it, asking: “Why do you need to travel abroad when you’re not the best [player in the U.S.]?”
In the end, Shelton claims that his father’s recommendation to avoid competing in ITF Junior events overseas helped his tennis growth because he was not constantly on the go and had a routine.
Shelton achieved his highest ranking of No. 3 in the USTA Boy’s 18s division and No. 306 in the ITF Junior at his peak. He placed third at the 2019 USTA Boys 16s Doubles Clay Court competition and finished as a finalist at the 2020 USTA Boys 18s Singles Winter Nationals.
