Nimona, a long-in-the-works adaptation of ND Stevenson’s best-selling graphic novel, has been purchased by Netflix. Originally in the works at 20th Century Fox and later Disney, the movie was scrapped before being brought back to life by Netflix and set for release in the summer of 2023.
Produced by DNEG and Annapurna Pictures, whose previous works include Vice, Phantom Thread, Booksmart, Missing Link, and more, Nick Bruno and Troy Quane (Spies in Disguise) will helm the upcoming Netflix film Nimona.
Nimona’s screenplay was written by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor, and the film’s story was penned by Baird, Taylor, Ribon, Ribon, Haimes, Bruno, Quane, and Bunin. The producers are Roy Lee, Karen Ryan, and Julie Zackary, while the EPs are Robert L. Baird, Megan Ellison, and Andrew Millstein.
Nimona had a rocky production history leading up to its creation on Netflix, having been produced for Fox and then Disney beginning in 2015. Blue Sky Studios, previously known as the Animation Department at 20th Century Fox, was responsible for the initial production of the film.
The original release date of 2020 has been moved back to 2022. In February 2021, it was revealed that Disney would end production on Blue Sky because the company already owned Pixar and Walt Disney Animation.
This sparked a lot of rumors regarding Nimona’s future, and at the time, the team working on the film predicted it “will likely never see the light of day.” Soon later, word emerged that Nimona had been pulled from the release schedule and that production had ceased.
In early February 2022, after months of speculation, Netflix registered a copyright for the name “Nimona.”
ND Stevenson tweeted in response to the movie’s acquisition by Netflix:
Nimona’s always been a spunky little story that just wouldn’t stop. She’s a fighter…but she’s also got some really awesome people fighting for her. I am excited out of my mind to announce that THE NIMONA MOVIE IS ALIVE…coming at you in 2023 from Annapurna and Netflix 🤘 pic.twitter.com/wEZuM2sXTt
