The events in Dumb Money actually happened. Story-wise, the film revolves around the early 2021 r/WallStreetBets short squeeze.
Keith Gill (aka Roaring Kitty) is our protagonist. He has posted optimistic messages on Reddit and YouTube about the potential profitability of GameStop stock. shares in $GME were exposed to a giant “short squeeze,” which led to investors re-buying the shares at ludicrous prices and contributing to the stock’s meteoric rise in price.
Some investors made out well, but investment businesses lost millions and came under increased government scrutiny. Two and a half years later, the film adaptation of the story is now in production.
