A gυn sh00t becomes the reason for canceling the ending of the city’s Juneteenth Festival on the second day at Pack Square Park downtown. All this happened on 17 June. Asheville Police Department arrested a 16-year-old boy having a deἀdly weapon to kἰll anyone or gave a severe injury, Capt. Joseph Silberman said on 18 June. Though his name is not public yet, he is a juvenile.
At 8:51 p.m. he fired two times and in response, two juveniles were founded seriously injured. Both were transported to Mission Hospital for treatment. One is released and the other is Serious but out of danger now. Two more juveniles were also caught by officers and they cleared that one is released.
“Officers and Forensic Technicians also recovered a 9mm pistol and a host of physical evidence that littered the park,” they said.
The Festival scheduled from 1-6 p.m. was canceled on 18 June by City of Asheville spokesperson Christy Edwards and Joseph Fox, Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Asheville, and Buncombe County vice president.
The City of Asheville’s Facebook page posted a statement by the MLK Jr. Association on June 18:
“We regret to inform you that the second day of the Juneteenth Festival, Sunday, June 18, has been canceled due to a sh00ting that occurred this evening (June 17) at the conclusion of the Festival.”
“Individuals that need to pick up items left behind at Pack Square Park can do so starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday. We are terribly sorry and sad for the inconvenience after having had such a wonderful day of bringing communities together.”
Steve Wright, managing partner at Pack’s Tavern who was moved when the incident occurred, told on June 18 that the mishappen has completely happened in the park. The first build fired at the park hit a building’s double pane window and break the first layer of glass but did not enter the building.

“We want to recognize and empathize, and our prayers go out to the victims of the event in the park,” Tom Israel, whose family owns Pack’s Tavern, told on June 18.
Fox said at Yahoo, the MLK Jr. Association decided to cancel the June 18 event.
“We had closed down already,” he said. “We had had a wonderful day and had made the announcements, ‘Thank you for coming, Drive home safely.’ I was in the parking lot packing up when I heard gυnfire. Most of our folks had already left the park.” “The MLK Board decided to cancel, but we heard City Council also decided to cancel.”
According to Fox, there are several questions unanswered yet regarding the sh00ting.
“We canceled because we knew it was an active crime scene,” he said. “We needed to communicate to everybody involved — vendors, entertainers, people coming in from out of town — that we didn’t know how long it would be an active crime scene. We did it for them, and for public safety reasons.”
Fox also said, “It was a wonderful time,” he said. “Everybody came together; people were celebrating. It was a beautiful day, and we’re sad and heartbroken it ended the way it ended.”
On 19 June celebrated as a federal holiday from 1865, in the respect of soldiers because on this day the civil war ended started by Major General Gordon Granger, who landed at Galveston, Texas.
“This was two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Thus, starting the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States,” the news release said.
