Dr Luke, a pop super-producer and songwriter, dropped a defamation lawsuit against Kesha, a former protege accused of rape in a 2014 lawsuit. The two sides revealed this in a joint statement on Thursday. The news marked the end of a legal battle that had been going on for almost a decade and had become a big part of both artists’ public stories.
The statement was posted to both of their social media accounts. It said that Kesha and Dr Luke had “agreed to a joint resolution of the lawsuit,” which was supposed to go to trial next month in New York after years of delays.
Kesha said, “Only God knows what happened that night,” she added, “As I’ve always said, I can’t tell you everything that happened.” Each quote was credited to a different musician, but they were put together. I can’t wait to close the door on this part of my life and open the door to a new one. I hope for nothing but peace for everyone.”
Dr Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, said, “I’m glad Kesha noted again that she can’t remember what happened that night in 2005, but I’m sure nothing happened. I never gave her drugs or hurt her in any way, and I would never do that to anyone else.
For the sake of my family, I have worked hard for nearly 10 years to clear my name. I need to stop thinking about this hard thing and move on. “I hope Kesha does well.”
In a decision made earlier this month, the New York Court of Appeals overturned a lower court’s finding that called Dr Luke a “public figure,” which would have made it harder for him to prove defamation in court by making it necessary for him to show that Kesha did something with really bad intentions. The court also said that a state judge should have let Kesha sue Dr Luke for emotional suffering and monetary damages.

No one was ever charged with a crime in the case. In a 2014 civil filing in California, Kesha said that she should be let out of her recording contract with Dr Luke, one of the most successful people behind the scenes in the music business, because he had “s*xually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abμsed” her since she was a teenager.
The singer said Dr Luke drugged and raped Kesha after a party in 2005, not long after the two started working together. Over the next 10 years, they worked closely together, selling millions of records and having two No. 1 hits, “Tik Tok” in 2009 and “We R Who We R” in 2010.
But in her complaint from 2014, Kesha said that the producer’s abμse, including insults about her looks and weight, had made her feel like she “nearly lost her life.” As the #FreeKesha movement grew online, stars like Adele, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Fiona Apple, Ariana Grande, and Kelly Clarkson joined forces to help Kesha.
