In 1984, Greg Abbott a recent law school graduate was jogging through the affluent River Oaks neighborhood in Houston, Texas. Little did he know that this particular run would have life-altering consequences.
As he passed by the house of Roy Moore a divorce lawyer, trἀgedy struck when a massive oak tree suddenly snapped and fell on Abbott, leaving him with fἀtal injμries and paralyzing his body. At the time of the accἰdent, Abbott found himself in a difficult situation.
Greg Abbott’s Journey From “Medical Bills to Settlements”
He was unemployed and lacked any form of health insurance. The medical bills began piling up with the hospital demanding over $81,000 in payment. Faced with an overwhelming financial burden, Abbott took legal action. He filed a lawsuit seeking compensation for his medical expenses and the damages caused by the incἰdent.
Eventually, Abbott was able to secure the necessary funds to cover his medical bills and more. Through the legal process, he obtained settlements totaling around $5.7 million. These funds came from Moore’s homeowner’s insurance and the tree service business, both of which were deemed negligent in failing to identify the tree’s internal rot, which ultimately led to the accident.
As a result of the settlements, Abbott now receives a regular monthly payment adjusted for the cost of living. This arrangement ensures that he will continue to receive financial support for the rest of his life. It is worth noting that, at the time of the incident, Abbott was serving on the Texas Supreme Court.
In an interesting turn of events, he later voted in favor of limiting the amount of money that individuals in similar circumstances could receive as compensation for non-medical damages.
Abbott supported the implementation of a $250,000 cap on such damages in situations resembling his own. This stance raises questions of hypocrisy, as he benefits from substantial multi-million dollar payouts that he will continue to receive until his pἀssing.

Critics argue that Abbott’s actions and views demonstrate a lack of empathy and disregard for the suffering of his fellow Texans. They claim that he actively opposes providing substantial support to others who find themselves disabled in a similar manner to him, while he enjoys significant monthly payouts.
This perceived hypocrisy and indifference toward the hardships of others have caused many to question his character and accuse him of being a self-serving individual.
In the eyes of Abbott’s detractors, his behavior is emblematic of a broader pattern of hypocrisy within the Republican Party. They believe that he epitomizes the party’s disregard for the well-being of others and a focus on personal gain.
While some individuals may not take issue with Abbott’s situation personally, they argue that it highlights a systemic problem within the GOP and a lack of genuine concern for the struggles faced by ordinary citizens.
