The Walking Dead hasn’t quite put Fear of the Walking Dead to sleep yet, but the series has already started its first new spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprise their roles in this series in which they foolishly travel to Manhattan to capture Maggie and Glenn’s son Hershel.
This season is a thrilling throwback, and in the premiere, we are introduced to the new “big bad,” The Croat. Who exactly is he?
Do you know that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is among the new cast members for Season 4 of The Boys? While the majority of the cast has been kept in the dark regarding Morgan’s character, at least one cast member has apparently shone light on the matter:
Obviously, we don’t know everything yet, as this is only the series premiere (“Old Acquaintances”), but I’m just happy that the show hasn’t decided to pair Maggie and Negan like a certain group of viewers who are undoubtedly joking. They are instead charging headfirst into a fight with The Croat, portrayed by Željko Ivanel.
Maggie informs Negan that she learned about The Croat when he descended upon her newest encampment, which consisted primarily of Hilltop residents but in a new location. Maggie quickly realized that he is an old member of Negan’s crew due to the fact that she encountered Negan during Glenn’s deἀth scene.
The Croat made this association known by releasing the old Savior whistle of Negan. What is Negan’s expression when he hears this whistle? A combination of embarrassment and regret: “Oh. That Croat.”
The Croat turned out to be a sort of Negan understudy. The semi-reformed villain said –
“Let’s just say that there were a lot of psychos in my crew back then.”
“But he always stood out as being an exceptionally insane son of a bἰtch.”
And here’s what Morgan told EW previously. He said that The Croat is an unwanted reminder of Negan’s past. Morgan states –
“He is an underling of Negan’s from back in the day.”
“But he has taken the evil to places where not even Negan in his heyday has gone … Negan has born this monster in Željko’s character.”
Maggie informs Negan (who is also being pursued by the Marshals) that he has little option but to assist her in locating Hershel. The conclusion of the episode reveals, when The Croat appears while threatening the imprisoned Hershel, that The Croat likely abducted Hershel in order to reach Negan.
The Croat asks Hershel –
“Did you ever meet the man who kἰlled your father?”
“He lived among your mother’s people for years. Negan. What do you know about him?”
As we see when he allows another prisoner to believe he is escaping, only to send him plummeting from a skyscraper into the walker-infested depths of the city, he appears to be a true sadist.
Sooner or later, we’ll learn The Croat’s true intentions. Until further notice, stay tuned to our Twitter feed where we will be posting regular updates.
