Mark Batista, a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department, dἰed Friday (9 June) while attempting to save his daughter from drowning in New Jersey.

Members of the FDNY carried his flag-draped casket through the streets and the firefighters all stood at attention. In a sad time, he gave his wife Leann a ceremonial fire helmet.

On June 9 at Avon-by-the-Sea, California, Batista, 39, drowned after diving in to save his teenage daughter from a rip current.

He served as an EMT and fireman for Brooklyn’s Engine 226. A commemorative firefighter helmet and a letter of condolence were to be presented to Batista’s widow and three children by the FDNY.

On Friday, Batista was rescued from the ocean at Avon by the Sea. When his 11-year-old daughter became caught in a rip current, Dad rushed into the ocean to save her.

Batista was rescued by EMTs in time, but she tragically pἀssed away. He had been a member of the FDNY for 15 years, with 15 of those spent with Engine Company 226. There is currently purple and black bunting there to commemorate him. At Batista’s funeral, firefighters from all across Fair Lawn, New Jersey, lined the streets outside the Vander Plaat Colonial Home.

His childhood home was in Teaneck, New Jersey, but he spent most of his time in Brooklyn. He is survived by a daughter, age 11, and two boys, ages 20 and 22. The New York Fire Department has established a scholarship fund for the kids. Friends and relatives have put up a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical expenses.
