Monday is Juneteenth, the newest holiday in the United States. Independence Day commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States, recalling the events of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when the last Black slaves of the Confederacy were set free by Union troops.
The day President Joe Biden officially recognized in 2021 rose to prominence in 2020 due to nationwide demonstrations over ongoing racial inequities in the justice system between Black people – specifically Breonna Taylor and George Floyd – and police.
Is the Post Office Open on Juneteenth 2023?
The post office will not be open on Monday (June 19, 2023). Juneteenth is a federal holiday, and the United States Postal Service observes all federal holidays. This means that post offices will be closed on Juneteenth, no mail will be delivered, and no packages will be gathered up or delivered.
The following is a list of what is open and what is closed throughout the holiday:
Government offices: Monday is a holiday, so non-essential federal, state, and local government offices are closed.
Schools: Many public and private schools are closed on Juneteenth, but you should verify your child’s school’s or school district’s calendar to be sure.
Banks: According to AARP, most institutions, including Bank of America and Wells Fargo, will be closed on Monday because the Federal Reserve will be observing Juneteenth. Credit unions also usually close.
FedEx, Amazon: Juneteenth is not listed on the FedEx website as a holiday. Nor does UPS. Amazon delivery is unaffected by Juneteenth, according to a company spokesperson.
NYSE and Nasdaq: Monday will be a holiday for American financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange. Additionally, exchanges operated by Nasdaq Inc. will be closed.
Grocery stores: Walmart, like most grocery stores in the United States, is open on Juneteenth.
As we commemorate Juneteenth 2023, let us recall our long and arduous journey to attain freedom. Let’s celebrate our shared history and culture as a community. It is an excellent opportunity to recommit ourselves to creating a more equal and just world for all people.
