Fox’s decision to terminate “The Mick” left viewers with a heartbreaking cliffhanger that may never be resolved for reasons that remain a mystery to anyone who appreciates good comic programming.
After Sabrina (Sofia Black-D’Elia) was electrocuted in a bizarre accἰdent shortly after her high school graduation, the Season 2 finale (and now series finale) showed Mickey (Kaitlin Olson) and the gang gathering over her as she lay comatose on the floor. They all just kind of stand there thinking about what it means when they hear that the teen’s brain and/or body may be permanently damaged.
The Chernin brothers, Josh and Dave, were confident they would be renewed, so they didn’t worry about ending the show on a downbeat note in its second season. Oops.
“Everybody was saying we were coming back, so we were pretty blindsided by that,” John Chernin said in an interview.
The goal was to make up for lost time in the months following the catastrophe. Sabrina was in for a rough time. We wanted to have Sabrina basically learn how to walk and talk again because we think [Black-D’Elia] is the most incredible actress.
To “completely change a character in the middle of a show’s run,” as Dave Chernin puts it, “was exciting.” I know that in the past we have rapidly recovered from injuries, but this one was going to alter my personality irrevocably. We had planned on doing five to ten episodes about her relearning how to walk and talk. After that, it was anyone’s guess.
The brothers planned to start the new season on what would ordinarily be a joyous event for Sabrina—her 18th birthday—but which would only serve to deepen her depression over her physical limitations.
John Chernin reveals-
“Mickey wouldn’t be able to stand the thought of that, so she’d plop Sabrina into a wheelchair and take her out clubbing for the wildest night in Manhattan you could imagine.”
”We always try to find a little bit of sweetness in a f—d-up situation.”
Dave continued-
“We had so many great pairings on this show, but I don’t know that there’s a better one than Mickey and Sabrina.”
“They’re such worthy opponents, that we found it hilarious when Sabrina inevitably fell behind (by a step or five). We joked that Sabrina would try to offend Mickey but would fumble her words, so Mickey would go get a meal and come back to it after Sabrina had time to collect herself.”
