“Never Have I Ever” ended after four successful seasons on June 8. The fourth and final season brought an end to the saga of high school senior Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan). In the final episodes, Devi not only decides on a college but also on a romantic partner.
All four seasons of Never Have I Ever are available on Netflix. The show’s cancellation was confirmed in March 2022, months before the beginning of season 3 on August 12, 2022.
What Happened in the “Never Have I Ever” Series Finale?
Season 4 continues up precisely where Season 3 left off with Devi and Ben (Jaren Lewison) trying to figure out what kind of relationship they are in. Devi and Ben have affection for one another, but they are unable to express those sentiments to one another, so they never end up together.
While Devi struggles with her jealousy, Ben begins dἀting Margot (Victoria Moroles) at the start of the school year severely straining his relationship with Devi. Meanwhile, Devi tries to balance college with her other responsibilities.
For sentimental reasons with her father (Sendhil Ramamurthy), Devi is determined on attending Princeton University and she tries all in her power to do it including joining the boys’ swim team as an assistant coach.
As a result, she develops feelings for Paxton (Darren Barnet) who has returned to his high school as an assistant swim coach after dropping out of university. Paxton and Devi conclude they are better off as friends, despite sharing a brief kἰss that almost gets him fired from his new job as a teacher.
Devi’s significant friendship crisis this season is just as intense as her romance drama. She and Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) have a falling out after Fabiola applies to and is accepted to Princeton early acceptance instead of Devi (Ramona Young) and she ends up falling for the same guy as Eleanor (Ramona Young): bad boy Ethan (played by Love, Victor actor Michael Cimino).
When Devi finds out that not only has she been waitlisted at Princeton, but that she has been denied by every single Ivy League institution she applied to, things take a decidedly worse turn.
Consequently, she tells her mother (Poorna Jagannathan) a lie that she was admitted to every school she applied to which leads to an ever-expanding web of deceit. While seeing therapist Dr. Jamie Ryan (Niecy Nash), Devi experiences a breakthrough just as her life is falling apart.
Devi’s therapist tells her she should be proud of her progress over the years. She tells Devi:
“Look how far you’ve come, You faced your trἀuma and you came out on the other side.”
Devi writes a letter of continuous interest concerning her late father as a last-ditch effort to improve her chances of being accepted to Princeton. She writes that she was hesitant to write an essay about her father for school for fear of being “exploitative and wrong.”
But she understood that there is no way to “know about her” without “knowing about him.” They dreamed up Princeton together, she said and she had fiercely held on to Princeton so that she could keep holding on to him. Devi’s luck changes for the better in the series finale.
She reconciles with her pals and gets the news that she has been admitted to Princeton. She also makes up with Ben, despite his disappointing news that he’ll be spending the summer away before enrolling at Columbia.
Devi and her pals celebrate one final time before college as her grandma (Ranjita Chakravarty) marries her new boyfriend. They play a suitable game of “Never Have I Ever” at the dinner table when Devi sees Ben across the room.
Ben makes a great gesture by telling Devi he flew across the country to declare his love for her and Devi responds in kind. They’re both off at different schools, yet they still decide to be together.
Devi prayed to the Gods and at the end of this episode, she does the same thanking them for her “awesome life” and all the wonderful people in it.
The final scene is a montage of everyone’s lives after graduation: Devi’s mom dἀting again, Fabiola thriving at Howard University, Eleanor directing a new film with the help of Trent (Benjamin Norris), Paxton enrolling once again at Arizona State University, Kamala (Richa Moorjani) and Mr. Manish Kulkarni (Utkarsh Ambudkar) sharing an ice cream cone and Ben and Devi cuddling up to.
