The cause and manner of Keenan Anderson’s deἀth, who pἀssed away on January 3 after being tased by LAPD officers, have been made public by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
According to a news release from the coroner, “the cause of deἀth of 31-year-old Keenan Darnell Anderson was effects of cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart) and c0caine use (deἀth determined hours after restraint and conducted energy device [CED] use),” the statement added. “It is unknown how the deἀth occurred.”
When Anderson, a high school English teacher from Washington, D.C., was involved in a traffic accἰdent in Venice in January, LAPD police decided that he seemed to be under the influence. Anderson was visiting family in Los Angeles at the time.
He was speaking with the officers when he took off, starting a brief foot pursuit until they caught up with him. Anderson alIegedly became a recalcitrant at that point, prompting the employment of a stun gυn, body weight, hard grips and joint locks as they shackled him.
Anderson was tased six times during the altercation, according to Michel Moore, the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.
According to the coroner’s statement, an external investigation of the discharged CED showed that the probes were deployed without making contact with the skin and that the trigger activations were applied to Mr. Anderson’s back by drive-stun.

His kἰlling sparked outrage since it was one of three deἀdly use-of-force events that LAPD officers engaged in over the course of two days in Los Angeles County.
Since then, Anderson’s kin has sued the city of Los Angeles for $50 million in damages. Regarding the coroner’s reports, Mayor Karen Bass released the following statement:
“Keenan Anderson was a father, a son, a brother, a cousin, and an educator of young people. He was loved and he is missed. My thoughts are with his friends and family as I know the release of this report will cause them and many Angelenos great pain as they still mourn this l0ss.
I remain committed to expanding the public safety system to include health professionals and to ensuring LAPD officers receive the best possible training to assist people in crisis.
The coroner raises questions that still must be answered and I await the result of the investigation already underway. I know that in this time of pain it sometimes feels like there is no hope, but we must turn the pain into concrete, substantive change – and we will.”
