Ooku The Inner Chambers Trailer: Officially Announced for June 2023!

On May 23, 2023, the long-awaited Ooku: The Inner Chambers trailer is finally released. Noriyuki Abe directs the anime version of the popular manga. The manga, written by Fumi Yoshinaga, depicts a future in Japan in which a shortage of male offspring has empowered women to seize power.

The storyboard for Ooku: The Inner Chambers was written by Noriyaki Abe, who is recognized for his work on Bleach, Seven Deadly Sins, and other anime series. In 1993 and 1994, he took home the Animage Anime Grand Prix. There’s no way the impending gender-swapped anime, which boasts a well-known director, manga author, and voice cast, will be any good.

The anime’s cast includes Yûki Kaji as Gyokuei, Mamoru Miyano as Madenokôji Arikoto, Tomokazu Seki as Mizuno Yûnoshin, Jun Fukuyama as Sutezô, Kikuko Inoue as Kasuga no Tsubone, Sanae Kobayashi as Tokugawa Yoshimune, Miyuki Satô as Onobu, Eriko Matsui as Tokugawa Iemitsu, Hitoshi Kubota as Narrator and more. Takasugi Rika writes the script, while the score is composed by Kenji Kawai.

In Ooku, the Inner Chambers, we learn that during the Edo period in Japan, the male population was wiped off by a mysterious strain of red pox. Eighty years after the epidemic began, men’s numbers have drastically declined, forcing women to pick up the slack.

Women have every position in the government, even that of Shogun (military ruler). Conversely, men are expected to do most housework and child care. And the most handsome men in the country are drafted into the Shogun’s guard.

Tokugawa Yoshimune, the ninth Shogun, is shown entering a hall with three thousand adoring male subjects bowing before her in the just-released video. She merely refers to them as silly males in costumes.

The narrative explains how 3,000 handsome men are being brought into the nation to serve the Shoguns, even though men are scarce there. These fellas are known as Ooku. The eight shoguns then read the past to learn if Japan has always been this way.

It all began with the birth of Lemitsu, the third shogun. Men had held all positions of authority, responsibility, and care for women up to that point. Because of the illness, Lemitsu must succeed his father as Shogun.

Her hair is shorn off, and she is beaten and trained hard. Upon learning she will be the next monarch, we also witness her emotional breakdown. Because of this burden, she has to give up her femininity. She, too, falls in love with Arikoto, but their relationship must end because of her strict Shogun values.

The storyteller poses the question, “What will be found when the history is unraveled?” to the audience. Then we jump to the present day; the eighth Shogun asks the appreciative crowd of three thousand whether anyone has any problems with her being in charge.

Anime productions never fail to wow and this trailer is no exception. It’s a novel to imagine a Japan where males perform traditionally female tasks like child care and housework while women take on the role of male bodyguards. Yôko Satô brilliantly executed the character designs.
