After Taylor Hawkins, their longtime friend and drummer, pἀssed away unexpectedly, the Foo Fighters have chosen a replacement drummer.
The band unveiled studio drummer Josh Freese as Hawkins’ replacement during the “Foo Fighters: Preparing Music for Concerts” live stream event that featured a preview of the group’s 11th studio album, “But Here We Are,” on Sunday.
Freese is a seasoned drummer who has shared the stage with many artists, including Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, Sting, and Weezer. In 2022, he also performed with the Foo Fighters at a tribute concert for Hawkins in London, even using the late drummer’s own drum set.
Freese said in a post on his Instagram page that he insisted on playing the drums for the London tribute event, claiming “I want THAT energy to be up on THAT stage.” The post included a picture of Hawkins’ drum kit.
Freese reflected on his friendship with Hawkins in the same piece, claiming that the two frequently discussed how they felt like the “only 2 guys from (Orange County) in the room.” Hawkins pἀssed away in Colombia during a tour in March 2022 at the age of 50.

In January, the Foo Fighters shared that they planned to continue on as a band, saying:
“Without Taylor, we never would have become the band that we were — and without Taylor, we know that we’re going to be a different band going forward.”
“And we know that when we see you again — and we will soon — he’ll be there in spirit with all of us every night.”
They stated in April that “But Here We Are,” their upcoming album, would be released on June 2. The record was said to be the result of “a year of staggering l0sses, personal introspection, and bittersweet remembrances.”
A summer tour by The Foo Fighters gets underway in New Hampshire on May 24.
