Jim Brown, who retired from professional football early to pursue acting and civil rights activism, has pἀssed away, his family confirmed. He was 87.
Brown dἰed peacefully in his Los Angeles residence on Thursday night (18 May) with his wife Monique by his side, according to a family spokesperson.
Monique Brown said in a statement –
“To the world, he was an activist, actor, and football star.”
“To our family, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Our hearts are broken.”
Brown spent nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns and finished his career with 12,312 rushing yards and 106 touchdowns, good for 11th and 6th all-time in NFL history, respectively.

He was invited to the Pro Bowl every year he played in the league, was named the AP NFL Most Valuable Player three times, and won an NFL championship with the Browns in 1964. In eight of his nine seasons, he led the league in rushing yards, and when he retired, he held the majority of the main rushing records.
In 2002, The Sporting News recognized him as the finest professional football player ever. Before the conclusion of his football career, Brown transitioned into acting. He retired from football at the height of his career to pursue an acting career.
In the 1970s, he accumulated 53 acting credits and several prominent roles. One of the first films to feature interracial love scenes, 100 Rifles, starring him in 1969, helped establish him as Hollywood’s first black action hero.
