Former President Barack Obama addressed a number of major issues confronting the country in an exclusive conversation with “CBS Mornings” co-host Nate Burleson but it also got personal.
Obama said that being out of the White House and being able to spend more time with his wife, Michelle Obama, helps their relationship.
He said that Malia and Sasha were Michelle Obama’s top concern when they were growing up, even when they were living in the White House. He said –
“And so I did not fully appreciate, I think — as engaged of a father as I was — the degree of stress and tension for her knowing that not just me and Michelle were under scrutiny and in this strange environment, but that we were raising our daughters in a kind of situation that just wasn’t normal.”

Michelle is “a little more forgiving” of all his imperfections now that the daughters are “doing good,” he claims. The former first lady has been open about the problems in her marriage.
Last year, she said that when their two children were young, she “couldn’t stand” her husband for about a decade. She said last month on “CBS Mornings” that she talks about these things “because marriage is hard.” She said –
“And a lot of young people quit on marriage over things that are just a part of the commitment.”
“We’ve been married for 30 years. If I fell out with him for 10, and we had a great 20 years. I’d take those odds anytime.”
She said that in a time when marriage is romanticized and “more about the dress,” people who have had good marriages should be honest about the fact that making a promise to be with someone means compromising, which “ain’t always fun.”
