Who is John Durham?
John Henry Durham is an American lawyer who served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut from 2018 until 2021. After being appointed as the Department of Justice’s special counsel, he began his investigation into the beginnings of the FBI’s investigation into Russian intervention in the 2016 U.S. elections in April 2019.
For 35 years, he worked in Washington as an assistant U.S. attorney. He is well-known for his position as special prosecutor when he opted not to press crἰminal chἀrges connected to the destrμction of tapes of t0rture at a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) facility.
He was a native of Boston, MA. After completing his undergraduate studies at Colgate University in 1972, he went on to receive his law degree from the University of Connecticut in 1975. In the years after his college graduation, he spent them as a VISTA volunteer on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana.

What did John Durham do in His Life?
After serving as a state prosecutor for five years, Durham moved on to a federal position in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut. From 1982 until 1989, he worked as an attorney and later as a supervisor in the Organized Crἰme and Racketeering Section of the Justice Department’s New Haven Field Office.
He headed the office’s crἰminal division from 1989 to 1994. He was the Deputy U.S. Attorney and he filled the role temporarily in 1997 and 1998. Because they were framed by the FBI, the 1968 mμrder convictions of Enrico Tameleo, Joseph Salvati, Peter J. Limone and Louis Greco were overturned when Durham released classified FBI papers in December 2000.
The records were essential in the 2007 legaI verdict against the government for $101.7 million won by Salvati, Limone and the families of the two other men who had dἰed in prἰson. Durham directed the investigation into claims that FBI and Boston police officers were in cahoots with the Mafia.
He was also responsible for several high-profile prosecutions in Connecticut including the conviction of former governor John G. Rowland and members of the New England Mafia. Durham was the interim U.S. Attorney for Virginia’s Eastern District from 2008 until 2012.
President Donald Trump nominated him to be the U.S. Attorney for Connecticut on November 1, 2017. His candidacy was approved on a voice vote by the Senate on February 16, 2018. He took the oath of office on February 22, 2018.
William Barr appointed Durham to head up an inquiry into the genesis of the Crossfire Hurricane and Mueller special counsel probes in May of 2019. Barr named Durham Special Counsel to head the investigation on October 19, 2020 to make sure it continued after Trump’s term ended.
