‘Super Mario Bros.’ and ‘Guardians Vol. 3’ Once Again Take the Top Two Spots at the Box Office

Super Mario Bros. and Guardians Vol. 3

Super Mario Bros. and Guardians Vol. 3

This weekend saw the release of a number of new films including a detective thriller starring Ben Affleck and a lighthearted trip to Italy starring Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton and Mary Steenburgen. However, Marvel and Mario once more secured the top two positions.

On Sunday, May 14, 2023 “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” collected $60.5 million from North American cinemas in its second weekend. This is a rare occurrence for huge superhero movies, which typically are front-loaded and experience significant second-weekend losses of 60% or more.

It also responds to the “superhero fatigue” query that some raised last weekend as it is the smallest Marvel dip since the start of the pandemic.

How much did ‘Super Mario Bros.’ and ‘Guardians Vol. 3’ Earn at the box office?

With $91.9 million from overseas screenings included, “Vol. 3” has already made over $528.8 million globally.

Guardians Vol. 3

The Super Mario Bros. Movie came in second place with $13 million in its sixth weekend increasing its domestic gross to just under $536 million. Since Mario entered the picture, families with younger children have hardly had any other options at the cinemas, leading to repeat viewings and its sustained dominance at the box office, where it is still showing in 3,800 domestic sites.

Super Mario Bros.

It is worth $1.2 billion globally. Chris Pratt’s roles as the voice of Mario and Star-Lord in the blockbuster “Guardians” have sparked discussions over how much of a pull is due to star power vs brand power. It was a very busy weekend for new releases with broad and restricted releases in every genre and of every caliber.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore said:

“The second weekend in May is very notable, traditionally speaking because it bridges the gap between a big summer kickoff movie (“Guardians 3”) and the next big blockbuster (“Fast X”). Everyone in the business knew Guardians would dominate the weekend but it provided an opportunity for a lot of movies to get out there that hit that sweet spot between two behemoths.”

Which are the Other Movies that hit the Box Office?

The top-performing song on the charts, “Book Club: The Next Chapter,” brought in $6.5 million from 3,508 venues. Focus Features’ Mother’s Day weekend release of the sequel reunites the actors with writer Erin Simms and director Bill Holderman.

77% of the audience members were female, 59% were Caucasian and 66% were over 45. The $20 million production is hoped to benefit from Mother’s Day and has a respectable carryover. Meanwhile, “Hypnotic,” a film by Robert Rodriguez is a box office disaster.

Affleck plays a detective whose daughter goes missing in the thriller, which reportedly cost $65 million to produce. Charlie Day’s Hollywood parody “Fool’s Paradise” made $443,140 from 784 venues and the anime-inspired “Knights of the Zodiac” barely grossed $535,000 from 586 theaters were two more mid-level films that failed to make a huge impression.

Blockbuster Movies

The critically acclaimed “BlackBerry,” directed by Matt Johnson and starring Glenn Howerton and Jay Baruchel, got off to a rocky start with $473,000 from 450 cinemas. Additionally, Sony Pictures Classics released the Yogi Berra biopic “It Ain’t Over” in 99 theaters, grossing $106,000.

Dergarabedian pointed out that a number of smaller movies had successful weekends this weekend with strong per-theater averages including “Monica” from IFC ($26,500 from two theaters) and “The Starling Girl” from Bleecker Street ($27,736 from four cinemas).

There are several options available right now for moviegoers. On home screens, there was a lot of competition, including a Michael J. Fox documentary on Apple TV+ and the action movie The Mother on Netflix.

“Air,” which has been in theaters for six weekends and is still among the top 10, also debuted on Prime Video. The summer box office competition will heat up significantly the following weekend when “Fast X” debuts, followed by the live-action “The Little Mermaid” on May 26.
