Ja Morant, a guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been barred from participating in team events after an apparent Instagram Live video of him brandishing a gυn while riding in a car with others went viral on social media on Sunday 14 May, just two months after the athlete had previously been punished for a related clip.
The Grizzlies stated on Twitter that Morant had been suspended from all club operations “pending League review,” adding that they had no additional comments.
In March, the NBA punished Morant with an eight-game ban for “conduct detrimental to the league” after he was captured on Instagram Live brandishing a revolver in a nightclub in Glendale, Colorado, a Denver suburb, as per another Instagram Live video.
The league claimed at the time that an inquiry had “not found that the gυn in question belonged to Morant, was brought by him into the nightclub, or was shown by him for more than a moment. Additionally, the inquiry did not reveal that Morant had the weapon either while traveling with the team or inside any NBA facilities.
Morant’s behavior “was irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous,” Silver said in a statement. Given his huge popularity and influence, particularly among young followers who look up to him, it also has major ramifications.
He has shown true regret and contrition for his actions. Ja has also made it obvious to me that he has grown from this experience and that he realizes his duties and responsibilities to the Memphis Grizzlies and the larger NBA community go far beyond his performance on the floor.
Later in March, Morant expressed regret to the media, telling them he had sought counseling to deal with his stress and he promised to “be more responsible.”
Then, Morant remarked, “I’m fully sorry for it (his ban). “My responsibility now is to be more responsible and intelligent and to stop causing any of that.”
He blamed stress in part for the incident.
I sought counseling in Florida to learn how to handle stress. Avoid the negative coping mechanisms I’ve used in the past to deal with stress, which led to blunders.

Morant was selected by the Grizzlies in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft. He was born in South Carolina and attended Murray State University. At the conclusion of his rookie season, he received the NBA Rookie of the Year award.
The Grizzlies’ season came to an end last month when the LA Lakers knocked them out of the playoffs.
