Officials announced on Friday, May 12 that a 17-year-old Honduran immigrant child who entered the country unaccompanied dἰed while in custody at Florida this week. This is the second such deἀth in the past two months.
The youngster was named Angel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza by Enrique Reina, the Honduran secretary of foreign relations who also demanded an exhaustive investigation into the boy’s pἀssing. Espinoza was in Safety Harbor, Florida, a small town west of Tampa that houses an unaccompanied minor refuge.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recognized the deἀth but gave little information regarding the circumstances. The agency said:
“The department is deeply saddened by this trἀgic loss and our heart goes out to the family with whom we are in touch.”
According to a U.S. official, no altercation of any kind contributed to the deἀth. A representative for Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services, the shelter in Safety Harbor declined to comment on the teen’s pἀssing and instead directed inquiries to HHS.
The deἀth of a 17-year-old who pἀssed away at East Countryside Hospital was being investigated by the local sheriff’s office. A cause of deἀth has not yet been established. HHS has informed senators on Capitol Hill of Espinoza’s pἀssing.
The chil was discovered unresponsive on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 morning, rushed to the hospital and later declared deἀd an hour later, just before 9 a.m. Espinoza was reportedly detained for five days before he pἀssed away.
