In this year’s academic session, 14 students dἰed at North Carolina State University. Mick Kulikowski, NC State’s director of strategic communications and media relations said seven students committed suἰcide, two fἀtally overd0sed, four dἰed of natural causes and one was kἰlled in a car accident.
Mariana Fabian, a fourth-year student said:
“I really started feeling it once it got to the fourth student deἀth because it really started to feel like it was an epidemic on campus at that point.”
The deἀths have had a significant impact on the Raleigh campus, where classes were held throughout the year even while the deἀth toll crept up. Although NC State is dedicated to enhancing student mental health, the report’s somber conclusion states that there is not only room for but also a need for, additional efforts.
Apart from the infrequent wellness days and outreach after student fἀtalities, college life at NC State went on as usual, leaving some students with little time for grieving. Junior Angelina Cordone told:
“We’re having to say goodbye to the students, but also focus on turning in an assignment.”
At least seven individuals including three who dἰed by suἰcide, were a part of NC State’s School of Engineering. Some communities on campus have been hit harder by the trἀgedy.
NC State which has more than 36,000 students has experienced an annual average of eight student deἀths since 2018. Eleanor Lott, a sophomore and a member of NC State’s mental health task force said:
“I think a lot of people really want to honor the lives that were lost, but there was also a big feeling of enough is enough.”
Vice Chancellor and Dean Doneka Scott described the year as a tragἰc outlier in late March, highlighting the difficulty of educating pupils in a country where the number of young people committing suἰcide and depression is on the rise.
Scott said:
“Institutions across the country are grappling with this. This is not an NC State-only issue. It’s an issue in higher education writ large.”
Some NC State students mentioned the constraints of being a student there, such as the university’s demanding STEM programs, as well as the stress associated with grades and social pressures in a community that has been isolated due to coronavirus-related restrictions for years.
