More than simply her Hollywood career Emma Stone is revitalized in the first official trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’s next film, “Poor Things.”
The film will be an adaptation of Alasdair Grey’s novel of the same name and will tell a story of “love, discovery, and scientific daring” in Victorian England. You may also learn which famous faces will play specific roles by reading on.
Stone portrays Belle Baxter, a Frankenstein-like character whose life is restored by having her brain surgically implanted into the body of her unborn child.
Willem Dafoe plays the brilliant but unconventional scientist who brings Belle back to life, while Stone plays his opposite in the film. In the preview, her character’s ethereal pallor suggests that she comes from the afterlife.
Mark Ruffalo plays Duncan Wedderburn, Jerrod Carmichael plays Harry Astley, Ramy Youssef plays Max McCandless, Margaret Qualley, Kathryn Hunter, Suzy Bemba, Wayne Brett, and Christopher Abbott plays Sir Aubrey de la Pole Blessington.

For Stone, “Poor Things” is her first significant part in two years, since “Cruella,” Disney’s 2021 origin story for the classic “101 Dalmatians” villain Cruella de Vil. It’s the second of three projects she’s worked on with director Lanthimos.

She played one of the lead roles in his period drama “The Favourite,” for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2018. The next film “And,” directed by Lanthimos, also features Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Shafer, among others.
From a scenario written by Tony McNamara, “Poor Things” was directed and produced by Lanthimos. Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures, an Irish/British production firm, developed the project alongside Film4. Both Lanthimos and Stone (via her Fruit Tree Banner) will be involved in production.
