On Monday morning 8 May, Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia discussed his on-court fight with Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets. When Jokić received a technical foul on Sunday (7 May) during the Suns’ victory in Game 4, Ishbia tweeted that the punishment should end there.
The tweet of Mat Ishbia is provided below:
Great win for the Suns last night in an amazing series so far!
That should be and is the only story. Suspending or fining anyone over last nights incident would not be right. I have alot of respect for Jokic and don’t want to see anything like that. Excited for game 5! Go Suns!— Mat Ishbia (@Mishbia15) May 8, 2023
Suns guard Josh Okogie fell into the crowd while chasing a loose ball with 2:36 remaining in the second quarter. Jokić snatched the ball away from Ishbia when it landed in his hands. Ishbia was knocked back into his seat after being elbowed in the chest by Jokić after he jarred the ball free.
In the video below, Ishbia may be seen wearing a green jacket:
Following the intervention of security, Jokić and Okogie both went back to the court. Jokić is seen looking directly at Ishbia from a different video perspective before making contact with the man.
Isiah Thomas, a point guard for the Detroit Pistons and a Hall of Famer, is seen pulling a piece of Jokić’s jersey as a third individual wearing a black shirt is seen placing his hand on Jokić left arm.
Ishbia and Thomas were spared punishment, but the man in the black shirt was led away. Jokić finished with 53 points, but the team still fell short.

Jokić and Nuggets head coach Michael Malone believed he shouldn’t have even received the technical foul, despite the fact that some people may have questioned why he wasn’t sent packing.
“The fan put the hand on me first,” Jokić said while declining to say Ishbia’s name. “I thought the league’s supposed to protect us or whatever. So, but maybe I’m wrong.”
Even after a reporter informed out that the fan was the owner of the Suns, he continued.
“He’s sitting on the court, then he’s a fan, isn’t he? … Whoever it is, he is a fan. He cannot influence the game holding the ball.”
Malone agreed with Jokić’s viewpoint.
“I think it’s crazy that Nikola got a technical foul in that situation,” he said. He’s going for the ball and some fan holds onto the ball like he wants to be a part of the game?”
Given the remarks made by Malone and Jokić, it’s conceivable that Ishbia is trying to keep himself out of trouble.
