Peter Good Obituary: Final Farewell to Designer of Hartford Whalers

Peter Good, a graphic artist and designer from Connecticut has pἀssed away. His pἀssing was reported by his relatives. At the time of deἀth, his age was 80 years old.

Over the course of a more than 50-year career, Good and his wife the artist Janet Cummings Good, designed hundreds of enduring and iconic logos for businesses, institutions and nonprofits. Just in Connecticut, you can see Good’s creations at the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Kate in Old Saybrook, the University of Connecticut oak leaf and many other places.

Sources said, Good pἀssed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at his Chester home. The Hartford Whalers hockey team’s logo is one of Good’s most well-known creations.

Good was chosen to design a new logo when the New England Whalers of the former World Hockey Association were merged into the NHL in 1979. Despite the Whalers moving to North Carolina in 1997, merchandise featuring the Good’s emblem is still in demand.

Paul Lukas who writes about sports uniforms and logos said:

“It is rather amazing that the team has been gone for so long and it still seems like a really powerful part of the local culture, which in my opinion testifies to a number of factors not the least of which is the genuine strength of that logo that they had.”

“The white ‘H’ then emerged from the empty space, followed by the whale’s tail and the letter ‘W’. It’s one of those sneaky little design elements that is rather clever.”

Additionally, Good created the previous look of Connecticut Public’s talk show “Where We Live.” Speaking on “Where We Live” in 2013, Good discussed the difficulties of designing an organization’s emblem, such as the oak leaf used by UConn.

Good said:

“There are a lot of factors at play, including tradition, the demand for novelty and marketing needs. Every logo we’ve ever created has a backstory involving disagreements with the administration, audiences and other parties and you try to somehow work within all of those obstacles to produce something that works.”
