At the age of 63, he experienced a serious health crisis in 2002 before a concert in his hometown of Orilla, Ontario. He required emergency surgery for internal bleedἰng brought on by a torn aorta. Before going back to the recording studio and live concerts, he underwent many operations and spent weeks in the hospital.
Lightfoot was hailed as a national treasure at the time of his sickness by Canadian country artist and admirer Ian Tyson. At the time, Tyson told Reuters:
“I don’t think anyone before or since has or will have the impact on Canadian culture that Gordon Lightfoot had through popular music or folk music.”
According to a Facebook post provided below, he canceled his 2023 US and Canada concert scheduled on April 11. That cancellation was due to his “health-related issues”

“I was disturbed by the fact that hardly anybody had a bad word to say about me.”
Lightfoot admitted to The Globe and Mail in 2008 that he wasn’t fully comfortable with the moniker “icon” despite it being universally praised. He told:
“Sometimes I wonder why I’m being called an icon because I really don’t think of myself that way. I’m a professional musician and I work with very professional people. It’s how we get through life.”
Lightfoot, who is renowned for his evocative lyrics and melodious songs has won 17 Juno awards, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammy and has been nominated for five Grammys throughout the years.
With tracks from albums like “Sundown”, “Summertime Dream” and “Dream Street Rose,” which expanded on his guitar-driven folk background to generate more rock and pop-oriented tunes.
Through extensive concert touring, he managed to keep a devoted fan base in both Canada and the United States. Over 200 songs have been recorded by artists like Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Judy Collins, Barbra Streisand, Glen Campbell and Richie Havens, who have all covered songs by Lightfoot
Lightfoot produced a soaring tune with moving words about the sailors’ final moments in it. With songs like the melancholy 1974 song “Carefree Highway” and the ballad “If You Could Read My Mind,” his first big international hit from 1971, about a failing marriage, he also topped the singles charts.
In addition to penning the music and lyrics for his songs, Lightfoot was a skilled performer who was recognized for his crisp articulation.
