The Story of Robbie Bachman and His Role in BTO’s Success

In 1971, Randy gave his younger brother Robbie a chance to drum for the Brave Belt. Chad Allan and Fred Turner were the other two members of Brave Belt. Robbie co-wrote “Summer Soldier” with the band in 1972 for their album Brave Belt II. Tim Bachman, Allan’s brother replaced him in Brave Belt after he left the band later that same year.

Robbie created the BTO ‘gear’ logo when Brave Belt became Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1973. Between 1973 and 1976, BTO was at the height of its popularity, during which time it released five albums in the Top 40, six singles in the U.S. and eleven singles in Canada’s Top 40.

Robbie co-wrote the popular song “Roll On Down the Highway” by Bachman-Turner Overdrive with Fred Turner, which peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the RPM Top 40 1975. After the tour for their 1979 album Rock n’ Roll Nights concluded, he stayed with BTO until late that year.

Robbie turned down the opportunity to reform BTO with his brother Randy in 1984 because of legal complications. He was also against Randy’s choice of Tim Bachman over Blair Thornton as the band’s second guitarist.

Garry Peterson, formerly of the Guess Who replaced him on drums for the 1984 album and accompanying tours. After Randy Bachman left the band in 1991, Robbie reunited with the Not Fragile lineup of BTO for a series of reunion tours from 1988 to 1991.

Robbie and the rest of the band, along with Randy Murray on guitar and vocals, continued to perform as BTO until the year 2004. Trial By Fire: Greatest & Latest released in 1996 is the only new album to feature this lineup.

After reuniting in 2009, Fred Turner and Randy Bachman got to work on new material in 2010 culminating in the release of their album “Bachman & Turner” in September 2010 to coincide with a world tour.

In an effort to stop Randy Bachman and Turner from performing under the Bachman-Turner Overdrive moniker, Robin Bachman and Blair Thornton filed a lawsuit against Randy Bachman. The Canadian Music Hall of Fame inducted Robbie and the Not Fragile lineup of Bachman-Turner Overdrive on March 29, 2014.
