Mike Shannon’s son, Tim Shannon issued a statement on the family’s behalf.

What is Mike Shannon’s Cause of Deἀth?
Mike Shannon’s Cause of Deἀth is unknown yet. Starting in 1972, Shannon worked in the broadcast booth for 50 years. Following a brief stint in the front office, he played for his hometown team for nine seasons including the first two with future Hall of Famer Stan Musial.
Joe Buck, a close friend of Shannon’s and former radio partner claimed that Shannon had a significant impact on his professional life. Buck said:
“I learned broadcasting from my father (Hall of Fame announcer Jack Buck) but I learned baseball from Mike, He was a loyal and great man. I didn’t know anyone who had more fun. He had the best schedule and always had stuff going on.”
Shannon had a keen eye for talent and emerging trends, but one of the few things he got wrong was assuming Maris’ record for most home runs in a season would stay.
After the 2021 season, Shannon who was known to St. Louis supporters as “The Moon Man” for his entertaining stories told from the booth, announced his retirement. Before they closed in 2016, he owned a pair of eateries close to Busch Stadium.
Shannon began working for the Cardinals in 1971 after finishing his playing career and in 1972 he transitioned to the radio booth. After calling Cardinals games for 50 years, he decided to retire after the 2021 season. During his career, Shannon also worked for NBC’s Baseball Game of the Week and called NFL games for the St. Louis Cardinals on the radio.
Shannon received an extensive list of honors throughout her career including induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014. Shannon worked with the Cardinals organization for 62 years in total.
