Denzel Washington addressed a Colosseum full of exhibition executives with “thank you from the bottom of my heart” on Monday at CinemaCon.
During Sony’s presentation, which started off the annual four-day event in Las Vegas on Monday night, the star of The Equalizer 3 (the first trailer is out Tuesday after being screened in the room Monday night) received a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the director Antoine Fuqua.
Without you guys, we wouldn’t amount to anything. Feel free to rely on us. All of us owe our existence to you. From the depths of my heart, I sincerely appreciate it. “I’ve been blessed beyond my wildest dreams,” Washington declared.
The true cinema stars matter more than ever,” Sony studio boss Tom Rothman said in his opening remarks. Only truly worldwide hits can become household names, and that won’t happen through streaming. He emphasized that Sony “is the only major motion pictures studio dedicated entirely to theatrical,” highlighting the corporation’s wide range of films, from superhero fare to indies like Where the Crawdads Sing and A Man Called Otto.
The more people proclaim that particular genres are dead, the more we appreciate them. It’s always risky to be original. But the greater danger in my opinion is in being too predictable and uninteresting for the audience, as Rothman put it.

The term “movie star” is offensive to Washington, Fuqua continued. Audiences have grown to expect Denzel to act with integrity, dignity, and morals; to stand up for what is right, and to be resolute in his pursuit of justice.
The opening of the newly released Equalizer 3 trailer has musical elements from “Volare.” Former Washington governor Robert McCall (now an Italian resident) is “one of us now,” as one resident puts it. If the mafia shows up, as one of the characters puts it, “They’re like cancer, no cure,” and Robert has to look out for his pals.
