At the age of 96, Harry Belafonte pἀssed away. According to Paula M. Witt of the public relations company Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis, Belafonte pἀssed away on Tuesday from congestive heart failure at his New York residence with his wife Pamela by his side.

Belafonte was renowned for his singing, acting, and advocacy of the civil rights struggle. The creator of Motown also recalled Belafonte.

Berry Gordy told Fox News Digital that Harry Belafonte “My friend, Harry Belafonte, was truly a man of cause, conviction and principle.” He was a significant political figure during the Civil Rights movement in addition to being a fantastic entertainer. I can still clearly recall the day Harry and I joined the Poor People’s March to Freedom in 1968.

He will be missed, and I send his family my warmest condolences. Since the 1950s, Belafonte has been a significant artist.

For his lead performance in John Murray Anderson’s “Almanac,” he earned a Tony Award in 1954. Five years later, he made history by becoming the first Black actor to win an Emmy for the television special “Tonight with Harry Belafonte.”

He also co-starred with Dorothy Dandridge in “Carmen Jones,” an all-Black cast musical that was directed by Otto Preminger and was a critical and commercial success in 1954. In numerous Southern cities, when theater owners were intimidated by the Ku Klux Klan due to the interracial romance between Harry Belafonte and Joan Fontaine in his 1957 film “Island in the Sun,” the movie was outlawed.

The vocalist from the 1950s was well-known for songs like “Day-O” and “Jamaica Farewell.” His second album, “Belafonte,” which he published just two years after his initial one, debuted in 1954 and quickly rose to the top of the Billboard album chart.

His third album, “Calypso,” turned out to be his most popular and the first solo artist’s album to sell over a million copies in the US. Belafonte has four children during his three marriages, the most recent of which was to photographer Pamela Frank.

In addition to his wife, Belafonte is survived by eight grandchildren as well as his children Adrienne Belafonte Biesemeyer, Shari Belafonte, Gina Belafonte, and David Belafonte.

The musician and actor fought prostate cancer throughout the years. Following his recovery, he continued to give lectures on the illness to raise awareness.

He had believed that by talking about it, he would “improve” the cancer experiences of others. According to The Los Angeles Times, he stated that he has “watched people speak about cancer in varying degrees of misinformation for a long time.”
