Who Won the Quarterfinals Between Chelsea vs Real Madrid?
As the reports said, After a scoreless first half, Rodrygo scored twice in the second to lead Real Madrid to a 2-0 victory and a 4-0 aggregate victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
For the first time since 1993, Chelsea has dropped four consecutive games. They lose the Champions League against the defending champions, Real Madrid, with a score of 4-0 on aggregate.
After a tense first half that was reminiscent of Madrid’s 2-0 win in the first leg of the quarterfinal tie, the visitors settled in and were mostly in control up to halftime as Chelsea struggled to find their footing.
Chelsea showed a lot of flashes but not enough substance when it counted. Although Courtois made some excellent stops, he was still being targeted. Barring a complete meltdown tomorrow, Real will face Manchester City in the quarterfinals.
Just before halftime, Marc Cucurella was left alone at the far post and he should have scored but Thibaut Courtois made a diving save to keep scoreless. Courtois said:
“It’s not easy to go to the semifinals or the final. We’ve been to a number of semi-finals in the previous three years and when you lose one as we did against Chelsea in 2013—you don’t celebrate it”.
“We made it to the semifinals and that’s a big deal because it’s not easy to do so but if we lose now, it won’t matter much. Our goal is to see this through and triumph”.
Shortly before the hour mark, Rodrygo scored dashing Chelsea’s chances of mounting an improbable comeback and just over 20 minutes later, the Brazilian extended the lead for Carlo Ancelotti’s side sparking wild celebrations in Madrid.
After the game, Rodrygo said:
“I’m at a loss for words, I always say it’s a very special competition for me every time I play I can help the team. In light of this success, I say, I’m happy and I hope to carry on like that scoring more goals providing more assists and winning the Champions League again.”
With his cross played back to him by fellow Brazilian international Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo finished off a sweeping counterattack against a helpless Chelsea who have lost all four games since Frank Lampard returned as interim manager.
Federico Valverde set up Rodrygo for Real’s second goal in stoppage time, which prompted a mass evacuation of Chelsea fans from their home stadium.
Rodrygo continued:
“It’s a pleasure to be here at Real Madrid, the biggest team in the world. To reach the Champions League finals and ultimately win the tournament is something we consider to be virtually obligatory”.
“We’ve had that goal in mind ever since I got here; we have to advance far in this competition and we’ve done just that”.
