Dr. Charles Stanley, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Atlanta and well-known religious figure and TV preacher, dἰed at the age of 90 on Tuesday, April 18, the report said. Stanley’s television and radio sermons were broadcast on a global scale making him well-known to believers everywhere.
Stanley’s mother raised him after his birth on September 25, 1932 in Dry Fork, Virginia. Stanley lost his father when he was very young. After completing his BA at the University of Richmond, he went on to Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he received his B.Div.
Later, he attended Atlanta’s Luther Rice Seminary where he received both a Master of Theology and a Doctor of Theology. Stanley worked as an associate pastor at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta beginning in 1969.
Prior to that, he held similar positions at the First Baptist Church of Fairborn, Ohio; the First Baptist Church of Miami and the First Baptist Church of Bartow, Florida.
In 1973, Stanley began broadcasting his 30-minute television ministry, titled “The Chapel Hour” on two Atlanta stations, two years after becoming the senior pastor of First Baptist Atlanta.
In 1978, Stanley was approached by the Christian Broadcasting Network, a nascent satellite network in need of a Bible-teaching component regarding a nationally aired show.
Overnight, “In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley” went from having a solid local following to a devoted national audience. When Stanley passed away, his weekly broadcasts had been translated into more than 127 languages and broadcast on television, radio, shortwave and online.
Stanley’s weekly radio program had been running longer than any other in the country. In 1985 and 1986, Stanley presided over the Southern Baptist Convention. In 1988, he was honored with a place in the National Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
Religious Heritage of America honored him as their 1989 Clergyman of the Year. After Charles Stanley passed away, First Baptist Atlanta shared a Tweet in his honor:
