Succession actor Dagmara Domiczyk claims that filming the series’ major deἀth scene was made more traumatic because her own father dἰed during production.
Domiczyk, who portrays Karolina Novotney, Waystar Royco’s head of public relations and a part of the legal team on the HBO series, spoke to Rolling Stone about how her character handled the crisis following the unexpected deἀth of Logan Roy on a plane.
The actress shared that her father passed away in Poland when she was filming the scene (on one of the final two days of shooting the Emmy-winning series’ fourth season in New York).
His deἀth was eerily similar to the one she had portrayed on screen, and she said it was “a very strange season for me” to have to film Logan’s funeral around the time her father died, even though she was thousands of miles away from him in New Jersey.
That Succession and Logan Roy both died at the same time as her father’s deἀth “feels like the universe really — I don’t know the way it works,” she added. I had a job interview the following morning. We also shot the funeral a few days before my dad passed away; I’m not sure if I meant to tell you there is a funeral, but we’re obviously presuming there is.
Even before she got on the plane, the scene was “emotional,” and she had co-stars Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong ring in on the telephone to join in on the scene. Each and every take we did, they would call in.
I’m a very sensitive soul. My emotions are always on display. On that flight, it was all I could do to hold back the tears. She continued, “We filmed this episode on the airplane, and this was all done before my dad passed away.
Also, Mark Mylod would approach me and say, Dag, what you’re doing is incredibly great. However, Karolina did not [cry]. When it comes to this, she is the sane one. Activities abound. This is an extremely well-known person. Don’t cry, I beg you.
Domiczyk said that it wasn’t enough to deal with her father’s deἀth while filming an emotionally taxing scene for the show; she also had to deal with her sadness after the episode was over and aired. Though it “sounds kooky,” the actor said it was almost therapeutic to see an early cut of Succession “alone at night with my dog on my husband’s recliner.” She was able to witness how her character, Karolina, dealt with Logan’s deἀth on the plane.
My father passed away two months ago, but it feels like it was only yesterday in terms of the shock and trauma I experienced. That’s exactly how I feel about it. The episode began, and immediately this vein in my head began to ache.
She proceeded by saying, “I thought I was gonna have an aneurysm” when asked about her bodily reaction to watching the program. And naturally, I sobbed uncontrollably and praised it as a work of genius. The episode was so well-written, so suspenseful, and so expertly put together that I forgot about my loss for a while and immersed myself in the plot.
Domiczyk says that even while it helped temporarily, it was still “really, really, really difficult,” and that her friends and family sent her condolence letters when they saw the similarities and understood how to best support her.

I’ve had this irrational fear that my dad will die unexpectedly ever since I was a little child, and I have no idea why. So that transpired. “Thus, it’s been extremely chaotic,” she said. But there was Karolina: no-nonsense and prepared with a nice pen and a notebook, knowing full well that this day would come, what with his health problems and Logan’s challenges and hospital visits.
Domiczyk is certain in his claim that the show accurately portrayed the actress’s experience because of how quickly she became immersed in it.
“With these dramatic, sudden, violent kind of deἀths, the initial few days, there’s this kind of shock. You don’t believe it. And I think Succession really captured that,” she told the magazine.
“You don’t see them fully break down, and of course, my reaction in real life was like a wounded fucking animal, because it was hearing something that you expected to hear your whole life, but it hasn’t happened yet, so it’s just not going to happen. And it did happen. And so, as we get into the season, that grief is going to catch up with them.”
