Sega Will Acuire Rovio Entertainment, The Company Behind Angry Birds

Japanese video games going to mingle with Sega Sammy Holding Inc. They will purchase Rovio Entertainment, also known as the “Angry Birds” mobile games company. The amount yet offered is nearly $1 billion Wall Street Journal confirmed it on Friday. Though the deal is not finalized yet, in the coming week it will be finalized. 

Rovio Entertainment was got famous in 2017 after they launched the “Angry Birds” mobile game franchise. From 2009, when Angry Birds aired several spin-off games, shows and movies were aired. In 2019, Rovio developed an augmented-reality version of the game. 

Sega Sammy Holdings were developed by a merger of Sega and Sammy Corporation in 2004, also known as “Sonic the Hedgehog” games and movies.

Rovio said that after ten years profit is dropped up to 48% and blamed on the new player obtaining. According to WSJ, Rovio put an eye on sale to Israeli rival Playtika a maximum of $800 million but unfortunately, the sale was over in March.

“No formal decision has been made in this regard at this time, while it is true that we are considering such a strategic option,” Sega Sammy said.

This discussion was taken during a meeting of board directors. “Sega Sammy’s mobile gaming business is centered on the domestic market, while ‘Angry Birds’ is well known overseas. The acquisition would make it easier for Sega Sammy to grow globally,” Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda said.

“But there has been no big hit (from Rovio) other than Angry Birds, which was originally launched more than 10 years ago. The news would have been welcomed more positively if investors had seen newer technologies or more growth potentials,” Yasuda said.
