Since his debut in 1981 with the first Donkey Kong game, Mario has become one of the most recognizable figures in pop culture history. He is the public face of Nintendo Entertainment and, by extension, the public face of video gaming.
One of the most ubiquitous fictional characters of all time, Mario has appeared in over 200 games since 1981. Not many well-known figures enjoy as widespread recognition outside of their niche entertainment mediums as Mario does.
Even Mario has a life outside of video games. With a character with Mario’s level of fame, there is certain to be a lot of marketing potential. Super Nintendo Land, where fans may visit the Mushroom Kingdom and race alongside Mario and the gang, is one example of how Universal Studios is capitalizing on this opportunity. The section is currently available in Universal Studios Japan, and it will soon open at the California and Florida parks as well.
You may also have guessed that Mario has dabbled briefly in the worlds of film and television. The first was the largely benign children’s show The Super Mario Bros. Super Show (1989), and the worst was the live-action Super Mario Bros. feature from 1993.
Now that the time is right to tell Mario’s narrative, the animation firm Illumination Entertainment—creators of the Despicable Me, Secret Life of Pets, and Sing films—is rushing to seize the opportunity. The film is scheduled for release on April 7th, 2023, and a recent Nintendo Direct Digital Presentation gave us our first glimpse.
The presentation also introduced the film’s heroes and adversaries. A second, more in-depth trailer followed shortly afterward, and it featured the introduction of new characters such as the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom and a recognizable ape with a red tie.
The new teasers also provided our first listen to certain major celebrities in character as their voices lent to these recognizable figures. Mario is played by Chris Pratt
Chris Pratt (The LEGO Movie) steps into the iconic role of the Italian plumber in a move that Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, called “very cool.”
The Mushroom Kingdom will be the setting for Mario’s introduction in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. film. When we first meet him in the film, he is staying in a Brooklyn apartment with Luigi, a plumber who is having trouble making ends meet.
Upon arriving in the Mushroom Kingdom, he meets Toad, who instantly becomes his friend and guides him to Princess Peach. Unlike in video games, Mario has to learn the ropes of using power-ups and racing go-karts as the movie continues.
Princess Peach, played by Anya Taylor-Joy
Princess Peach, voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), is a popular Super Smash Bros. character who frequently finds herself imprisoned by Bowser despite being more than capable of holding her own.
As Bowser wants more power or wants to force Princess Peach to marry him, he almost frequently attacks and captures Princess Peach, the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Despite Bowser’s relentless assaults on her realm, Peach’s undying devotion to Mario remains unwavering. For a long time, Peach was essentially the stereotypical “damsel in distress,” but she’s come a long way and been given more depth as a character in recent years.
Luigi played by Charlie Day
Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) brings Mario’s neurotic, paranoid sibling to life with his hilarious performance. Luigi is more than just a green Mario, despite his brother’s tendency to steal the spotlight.
Despite his sensitivity to danger, Luigi has a good heart and is able to overcome his concerns when the situation calls for it. In the Luigi’s Mansion games, players take control of the famous sibling as he overcomes his phobias in a haunted mansion and earns his ghost-busting credentials.
Bowser Played by Jack Black
Bowser, or King Koopa as he is sometimes called, is Mario’s long-time enemy and is voiced by Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda). Bowser is just as well-known as a video game villain as Mario is as a video game hero, and the two go head-to-head in the vast majority of Mario’s games.
To help him in his evil schemes, Bowser usually has a large army of Goombas and Koopas at his disposal. Even his own children, the Koopalings, led by Bowser Jr., serve as lieutenants, as seen in the trailer by the sorcerer Kamek.
Toad Played by Keegan-Michael Key
Keegan-Michael Key voices Toad, Princess Peach’s loyal servant and the Mushroom Kingdom’s steward (Key and Peele). Although he initially alienated players by telling them that the princess was in a different castle, Toad has since proven himself to be an invaluable member of the Mario family, leading Mario and the rest of the gang in the right direction and inspiring his fellow Toadstools in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Toad’s own spin-off game, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (2014), was released not too long ago and allows players to team up with the less athletic, but no less determined, protagonist to complete puzzles.

Donkey Kong Played by Seth Rogen
Donkey Kong has been there for Mario from the start, and the two have been both allies and enemies throughout their history together. Seth Rogen provides the voice of the well-dressed gorilla in the new flick (Monsters vs. Aliens).
Yet, in reality, DK is not the same as the modern Donkey Kong, which is the offspring of the original game. DK has taken a cue from his grandfather and started lending a hand on Mario’s exploits and playing along in Mario Kart and Mario Party tournaments ever since.
The Donkey Kong Country titles are among Nintendo’s largest spin-offs, letting players control DK as he explores the island’s jungles with his family and faces a battle against his own reptilian arch-nemesis, King K. Rool. Like his early competition with Mario, he also received his own animated series, which is something Kong and company would rather forget.
