Developer Harlan Rogers Crow was born in the United States in 1949. His father, Trammell Crow, created the Dallas-based company Crow Holdings, where he now serves as chairman (and previously as CEO). He has made significant contributions to Republican and conservative organizations.

In 2023, Crow’s generosity toward Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was the source of much debate.

Where was Harlan Crow Born?

Born in Dallas to Margaret Doggett Crow and real estate mogul Trammell Crow, Harlan Crow was their third son. He is the youngest of five siblings. His alma mater was the Randolph-Macon Academy, located in Front Royal, Virginia. He started his education at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, but eventually switched to UT Austin, where he earned a BBA.

From 1974 to 1978, he served as a leasing agent for Trammell Crow Houston Industrial, and from 1978 to 1986, he oversaw Trammell Crow Company’s Dallas Office Building development operations. From 1986 to 1988, he led the Wyndham Hotel Group as its president.

When he took over Crow Holdings in 1988, the company was experiencing financial difficulties. Crow revitalized the company by expanding into new areas and taking on additional property management work. He was once the company’s CEO and now serves as chairman.

He has been on the board of the American Enterprise Institute since 1996 and was on its founding committee. Club for Growth is a 501(c)4 organization.

He has given about $5 million to Republican causes and organizations. After meeting Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in the early 2000s, Crow invited him to attend the Bohemian Club’s annual summer event at Bohemian Grove as his guest in 1997. In addition, he and publisher Wick Allison are friends and business partners.

Crow gave $500,000 to help promote President George W. Bush’s Supreme Court choices. Crow spent millions of dollars trying to stop Dallas from building a publicly owned convention hotel in 2009, but he was unsuccessful.

After Justice Thomas’s wife, Virginia Thomas, founded Liberty Central that year, he reportedly donated $500,000. When asked by The New York Times if he was the donor in question, Crow refused to say yes or no, saying, “I won’t disclose what I’m not required to disclose.”

Who is Harlan Crow Wife?

Crow and his new wife, Kathy, are parents to three kids. Kathy Crow has a BA from Princeton University and an MBA from Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business.

She serves on the executive boards of the Cox School of Business and the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at SMU, in addition to being a member of the SMU board of trustees. The Crows gave $5 million to SMU in 2014 to fund the construction of the Kathy Crow Commons. Margaret Crow, his mother, lived through the Nazi sinking of the first British ship of the war, the SS Athenia.
