Longtime ABBA guitarist Lasse Wellander has passed away after a courageous fight with cancer. He was 70. His loved ones posted a heartfelt statement to Facebook expressing their “indescribable sadness” at the news.
We are sad to report that our dear Lasse has passed away in his sleep. “Lasse recently became ill with what turned out to be widespread cancer and he passed away early on Good Friday.”
Wellander was described as humble, caring, kind, and loving by his family members, who also named him a “wonderful” father, husband, brother, grandfather, and uncle.
In a message released on Instagram, ABBA members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid (“Frida”) Lyngstad, and Benny Andersson paid respect to Wellander.
Wellander was raised in the Swedish towns of Skrekarhyttan and Nora after his 1952 birth. According to his website, he first learned to play the recorder and accordion before being influenced to switch to the guitar by The Beatles.
In 1974, Ulvaeus and Andersson asked whether he would like to join in on their recording sessions, and after a few previous careers in the music industry as a musician and producer, he began working with ABBA.

Wellander then stayed on with ABBA for a very long time, even after the divorces of Ulvaeus and Fältskog in 1979 and Andersson and Lyngstad in 1981. He participated in promotional activities, studio sessions, and soundtrack production for both “Mamma Mia!” films. In 2021, he contributed to ABBA’s comeback album “Voyage,” on which he played a key role.
In the 1980s, in addition to his work with ABBA, Wellander played with the Stockholm All Stars, the Low Budget Blues Band, and Zkiffz. For a time, he was also the proprietor of a restaurant and nightclub on the western coast of Sweden.
