It appears that this is not the first time the FWC has kἰlled or confiscated animals that were lawfully held by their keepers prior to the implementation of the Prohibited Species rule.
This week, wildlife authorities in Florida murdeɼed dozens of captive pythons and a pet boa constrictor named Big Shirl. Some venomous animal lovers believe that kἰlling the pythons and the boa was a mistake since the authorities overstepped their bounds.
Bill McAdam, the owner of the Broward County warehouse where the snakes were kept, said that on Thursday, April 6. 2023 officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission came to kἰll 34 Burmese and reticulated pythons with a bolt gūn designed to deal instantaneous and fatal blows to the snakes’ heads.
In February 2021, FWC commissioners added pythons to a list of prohibited species because they are a harmful invasive species that eat almost anything and have overrun the Everglades. Animals owned by commercial breeders had about five months to find new homes.
Big Shirl, a boa constrictor that McAdam had for over a decade is not on the list of banned animals in 2021. The Florida chapter of the United States Association of Reptile Keepers posted a video to YouTube in which an officer puts his hands to his head in apparent disbelief after learning that the boa they had just kἰlled was pregnant.
As per the reports of a spokesman for the reptile keepers’ group, Big Shirl’s autopsy revealed that she was carrying 32 young. McAdam said:
“Each newborn was worth approximately $3,500. When I found out that the boa I’d been caring for since it was a baby had been stolen, I lost my mind. I warned them, You’re going to have to foot the bill for this.”
Scientist-turned-free-diving model gets exposure thanks to viral footage of a python that ate a gator. 95% of pythons encountered by snake catchers are kἰlled. Assistance was requested in eliminating those in hiding.
The reptile organization’s attorney and legal advisor, Curt Harbsmeier said that the events leading up to the tragedy had their origins in February 2021, when the regulation change was finally adopted.
He stated that Chris Coffee, a commercial breeder and resident of Broward County whose pythons were kἰlled on had more than one hundred snakes to rehome as a result of the new regulation. He was able to locate new homes for about 120 of them, but the remaining 34 remained in the Broward warehouse.
