The box office was rocked by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and it did so with gusto. According to a press release, the film earned over $200 million in its first five days in North America and an estimated $377 million globally, breaking the record for an animated film’s opening weekend.
Since “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” opened in February with $225.3 million, “Super Mario Bros.” had the highest opening weekend gross of the year so far.
Chris Pratt plays Mario, Charlie Day plays Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy plays Princess Peach in this film based on Nintendo’s legendary “Super Mario” video games from 1985.
The comedic talents of Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen and Kevin Also included are Michael Richardson and Sebastian Maniscalco.
Actor Charles Martinet, Mario’s longtime official voice in the games, makes a special appearance in the film. Martinet, not Pratt, was the first choice of many gamers who felt the latter should have played the role of Mario.
