For a long time, I haven’t been this enthusiastic about a Pokémon set. Although this is largely attributable to how much fun I’ve been having with the Scarlet & Violet video game (much more fun than I’ve had since at least X & Y), the Pokémon being featured in the new set are an ideal blend of fresh faces and fan favorites.
In this short article, I’ll be highlighting a few of the most talked-about upcoming Pokémon TCG cards, including some of the stunning variant art treatments that make them so desirable to collectors.
#10 Professor Research (Full Art)
Every reissue of Professor’s Research sells well, as the book is always in demand. While I would ordinarily pass on this card, I predict both versions to be highly sought for by players due to the popularity of the Scarlet and Violet professors. The full art versions, especially of the coveted Turo, are recommended purchases.
#9 Dolliv (Illustration Rare)
The Illustrated Rare version of Dolliv is a huge hit with collectors because it combines Dolliv’s inherent cuteness with a slice-of-life aesthetic. Dolliv’s work among the olive trees is a wonderful example of how Pokemon may be used in everyday life. It’s a huge bonus that she can help prevent mid-game strikes from succeeding.
#8 Ex-Gyarados (Full Art)
The Terrestrial ability might be a game-changing meta-pickup. Spreading damage between the Active Pokemon and the Bench is a common tactic, and it seems promising to set up a benched Gyarados ex before putting it in to use its very solid haymaker attacks. Although the artwork isn’t particularly noteworthy, this card is highly sought after because it is among the greatest Pokémon to have access to the new ability.
#7 Fidough (Secret Rare)
Fidough is irresistibly adorable, even if the picture depicts what appears to be some bizarre form of cannibalism with bread. Many are eager to get their hands on this floppily adorable new Pokémon, and rightfully so.
#6 Penny (Special Illustration Rare)
Penny, Scarlet & Violet’s epitome of the emo girl, is quickly becoming a fan favorite among the new crop of trainers. The artwork depicts her thinking over her tragic circumstance (which I won’t tell, but is a high point of the video game), giving some emotional depth to an otherwise upbeat experience. All of these things make for an excellent collectible.
#5 Dondozo (Illustration Rare)
The stunning artwork is just one of Dondozo’s many strengths. The unexpected grace of what is otherwise a rather competent Pokémon design is just awe-inspiring, and it is only further highlighted by the literal burst of color. Despite its aesthetic appeal, Dondozo may be at the center of a tradition of methods based on the strength of a heaped discard pile.
#4 Koraidon-Ex (Special Illustration Rare)
While being the less well-liked of the new generation’s two legendary face Pokémon, this legend nonetheless deserves to be respected by collectors for its uniqueness and rarity. The fact that the alternative art features a tranquil, nature-filled environment increases its attractiveness, and the introduction of a new Pokémon ex always brings the possibility of change.
#3 Miriam (Special Illustration Rare)
The Special Illustration cover of Miriam is stunning and deserves a spot in any collection, but you might want to hold off on ordering it until the hype subsides and the price drops a bit. In addition to the beautiful artwork, this card’s powerful mix of recursion and card draw ensures that it will be in high demand for the foreseeable future.

#2 Gardevoir (Special Illustration Rare)
It should come as no surprise that the Special Illustration form of Gardevoir is an instant must-have for many gamers, given that the Pokémon is one of the most popular to ever appear in print or play. This card’s high playability stems from its high popularity and from the fact that it can boost your energy for the minimal cost of some damage. As a bonus, Gardevoir ex and its predecessors together tell a story in the shape of a triptych.
#1 Miraidon (Special Illustration Rare)
Players can’t wait to get their hands on the highly sought-after Legendary face Pokémon like Scarlet and Violet. People enjoy it when artists include more than one Pokémon in their work, and the Special Illustration edition of an already stylish Pokémon is the coolest form of it. As the card’s playability is factored in, it becomes something that everyone wants.
