Actor Jeremy Renner, who was nominated for an Oscar, admitted responsibility for the New Year’s Day snowplow disaster that nearly took his life and said he was sorry for putting his family through it.
After using the plow to move one of the family’s trucks out of the snow and onto the pavement, Renner claimed he was behind the wheel of the plow in an interview that aired on Walt Disney Co’s ABC network on Thursday, April 6, 2023.
Renner claimed he feared for his nephew Alex’s safety as the plow skidded on the ice after Alex had unhooked the links connecting the vehicle to the plow. Renner did not set the parking brake before he stuck one foot out of the plow and looked back at Alex.
The actor tripped and fell from the plow’s cab. Wheelchair-bound Renner told Diane Sawyer of ABC News:
“You shouldn’t be outside the vehicle when you’re operating it, you know what I mean? It’s like driving a car with one foot out of the car, “But it is what it was”.”And it’s my mistake, and I paid for it.”
Renner claimed he jumped back into the snowplow in an effort to halt its rollback and save his nephew from being crushed. He was flung forward after stepping on the plow’s driving tire tracks and the machine ran over him, shattering more than 30 of his bones, puncturing his liver and collapsing a lung.
According to his neighbors, who helped him, the 52-year-old actor was found with bl00d all around him, faint breathing and a break in his skull when he was taken to the hospital. Renner said, A sign language signal for “I’m sorry” was made to his family when he woke up in the hospital.
Renner said:
“It’s my responsibility, I feel bad that my actions caused so much pain.”
His ribs were fixed with titanium rods and screws and his legs and eye socket were rebuilt with metal. The actor was shown using a walking aid. He continues to need numerous hours of treatment every day for his wounds.
Renner’s work in “The Hurt Locker” (2008) and “The Town” (2010) earned him Oscar nominations for best actor and best supporting actor, respectively.
On Tuesday, April 4, 2023 he will return to Hollywood for a red carpet event for his TV series “Rennervations” in which he assists with the refurbishment and donation of used vehicles like buses to underprivileged regions.
Renner said that having his loved ones by his side was what kept him alive after the snowplow accident. He said with a laugh:
“I’ve been refilled and refueled with love and titanium”.
