Ethan Chapin Death

In an exclusive interview, Ethan Chapin’s parents discuss their healing process and their son’s legacy after their son age 20 was one of four students k!lled at the University of Idaho in a horrific incident last November.

Ethan Chapin is the oldest of three siblings, including identical twins Maizie and Hunter. The Chapins have indicated that their son Ethan was exceptionally close to Hunter, and now Hunter must face the world without his “wingman.” Hunter just called his mother, Stacy Chapin, from school to report a first for him: “Mom, I just went through the drive-thru by myself for the first time.”

She explained that being a triplet meant constantly being around other people.

Ethan Chapin took his sister to her sorority formal on his last night alive, November 12, 2022. After spending time with his brothers at Sigma Chi, he and his girlfriend, Xana Kernodle, spent the night at her off-campus apartment.

Ethan Chapin, Kernodle, and Kernodle’s housemates Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen were stabbed to dea†h in the early hours of November 13, 2022, inside the girls’ house. The crime that captivated the nation also spared two of the roommates’ companions.

Bryan Kohberger, 28, was apprehended on December 30 after being sought for six weeks. A Ph.D. candidate at nearby Washington State University at the time of the murders, Kohberger has not yet entered a plea.

Jim and Stacy Chapin of Conway, Washington, set up the Ethan’s Smile Foundation in his memory to provide financial aid to high school seniors in their hometown of Conway and to students at the University of Idaho.

On Sunday, the pair was in Washington’s Tulip Valley Farms, where Ethan and his brothers had worked, to talk to ABC News about the new yellow and white tulip bulb mix Ethan’s Smile which is being sold to raise money for Ethan’s Smile Foundation.

They said that about 80,000 bulb mixtures had been sold and were beginning to bloom after being planted.

Stacy Chapin loves seeing images of people’s tulips because “for anyone, it’s a concrete object that represents him and people can grow them in their yards and gardens.”

She added, “We have done something good that we know Ethan would love.”

The Chapins have grieved silently since their son’s murder and have instead focused on supporting their other two kids.

They still have a long way to go, and they anticipate that certain days will be particularly difficult symbols of life without their firstborn triplet. The triplets will reach the next significant age in October when they will turn 21.

“I just miss him,” said Ethan’s father, Jim Chapin. “I think about him every day.”

“I loved to hug him,” Stacy Chapin said of her son, who stood at 6 feet, 4 inches. “I’d give anything just to be able to hug him again.”
