Since its announcement in the summer of 2021, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken, has been one of the most awaited films in Hollywood.
Production began last year, and the buzz only intensified when photographs of Robbie and Gosling in full rollerblading attire were taken by photographers and spread like wildfire online. Warner Bros. Pictures has released the film’s first official trailer which we have provided you with the below section.
Using the opening sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey as inspiration, the first trailer for the film featured Barbie in her signature striped swimsuit in place of the mind-bending monolith. Only fleeting shots of co-stars including Ryan Gosling, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, and Simu Liu were shown, keeping the film’s plot a secret.
Dua Lipa’s participation was officially announced this morning via the official Barbie Twitter account. With Will Ferrell’s casting as the “insensitive” CEO of Barbie manufacturer Mattel confirmed, the new teaser hints that plastic perfection isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. And the “Ken-ergy” that Gosling has been promising is present.
Gerwig and her longtime husband and colleague Noah Baumbach wrote Barbie together. Gosling, Ferrell, and Liu have all been eager to laud the writing, even though both directors are better renowned for low-key indie fares like Lady Bird, Mistress America, and Frances Ha.
