Because it’s been almost a year after the announcement that a sequel to “I Am Legend” was in the works, fans have been left wondering if the project has been scrapped or if it will see a release in 2023 or 2024. The following is what we know about the upcoming I Am Legend sequel, often known as Chapter 2 or Part 2.
When can we expect to see I Am Legend 2 in theaters?
At this time, there is no set release date for I Am Legend 2. There has been no word on when filming will begin, but a sequel is in the works.
Many people assume that the delay is due to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards, which led to some very funny memes being shared online. Smith will be back in his role as Robert Neville, and he’ll be producing the film with Michael B. Jordan, who’ll also be in it, but in a different capacity.

Has production on I Am Legend 2 Ceased?
A sequel to “I Am Legend” has not been scrapped. Director Akiva Goldsman announced earlier this year (2023) that production on the sequel was still scheduled to begin at Warner Bros.
Goldsman let the cat out of the bag for fans, saying (via Deadline) that the sequel will “start a few decades later than the first” and will have “a little more adherence to the original text.” He is, of course, referring to Richard Matheson’s novel from which the films were adapted.
The Last of Us, where we see the world not just post-apocalyptic but also after a 20-30 year hiatus,” Goldsman continued, “have I completely captivated.” When I Am Legend 2 finally hits theaters, it will be interesting to see how much of an impact the video game franchise turned HBO series had on the film.
