The talk of “nepo babies” can resume now. Writer/director Sofia Coppola and her musician husband, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars, have a daughter named Romy Croquet Mars. She is 16 years old and claims she was just grounded for disobeying parental rules.
A video posted to TikTok by a younger Mars has gone viral; in it, she says, “Cook a vodka sauce spaghetti with me because I’m grounded.” To meet her camp friend for dinner, she tried to use her father’s credit card to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland.
The adolescent then elaborates on her embarrassment, saying that she had to look up pictures of garlic and onions on Google in order to tell the difference. She then asks, “Is this an onion?” while holding up a shallot.

When displaying herself with what appears to be a Grammy prize, she says, “Plus I thought I would do this since I’m already grounded due to my parents’ biggest rule, like I’m not allowed to have any public social media accounts, here’s why.”
Mars continued by saying her parents “don’t want me to be a nepotism kid, but TikTok is not going to make me famous, so it doesn’t really matter.”
Children of influential people, especially in Hollywood, are called “nepo babies” or “nepotism kids” to mock their privilege. As a widely-discussed article appeared in New York Magazine in December, the issue again became a hot topic.
