American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer Chancelor Johnathan Bennett is better known as Chance the Rapper. Bennett, a native Chicagoan who debuted with the 2012 mixtape 10 Day was born in 1987. In 2013, with the release of his second mixtape, Acid Rap, he began to receive widespread attention.

Later that year, in 2016, he dropped Coloring Book, his third mixtape to even more critical praise and public attention. It garnered him three Grammys including Best Rap Album and made history as the highest-charting album available solely through streaming services.

The Great Day, his first studio album, came out in 2019. Bennett is not only active as a solo artist but also as a member of the Chicago collective Savemoney and as the vocalist for the band the Social Experiment, who, under the direction of trumpeter Nico Segal produced an album in 2015 titled Surf.

Bennett has mentioned Kanye West, James Brown, MC Hammer, Prince, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Esham, Eminem, Souls of Mischief and Freestyle Fellowship as among his musical influences in interviews with XXL and Complex.

He has named Kirk Franklin as an inspiration and a favorite when asked about the gospel elements in his work. The music of Bennett has been called inspirational and adaptable. The jazzy melodies and gospel undertones that characterize his work are signatures.

Christian theology, Bennett’s issues with faith and his background are common themes in his lyrics. In an effort to amplify the gospel overtones in his work, Chance frequently features choirs. Bennett’s lyrics have been called “creative” and “colorful” by Sharde’ Chapman of HuffPost.

Bennett has a light lyric tenor voice with a wide vocal range that spans three octaves, and he frequently performs traditional singing songs. The lowest note Bennett can sing is a bass while the highest note he can sing is a tenor high F.

Bennett has acquired an interest in the fashion sector, which has become an integral aspect of his public persona. Bennett is a hat designer for the Chicago White Sox. Bennett’s wardrobe which typically consists of overalls and challenges conventional hip-hop rules, has been dubbed “redefining fashion”.

Some of his teachers at Jones College Prep High School made fun of his desire to pursue music as a career. After being suspended from school for 10 days in 2011 for marijuana use, Bennett created his first full-length effort, a mixtape titled 10 Days in under 8 months.

Bennett contributed to “They Don’t Like Me” off of American rapper Childish Gambino’s sixth mixtape, Royalty, released in July 2012. To help kick off his debut North American concert tour, Gambino eventually asked Bennett to join him.

Bennett discussed his personal style, his passion for making music and life in Los Angeles in a March 2014 shoppable online video for Dockers advertising the brand’s spring season.

Several songs on Kanye West’s 2016 album The Life of Pablo included Bennett, including “Ultralight Beam” and “Father Extend My Hands Part. 1,” “Famous,” “Feedback,” and “Waves,” all of which Bennett co-wrote and performed on.
