On Sunday, March 19, 2023 night at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Adam Sandler was honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Comedy in the presence of family and well-known friends.
Rock who has known Sandler for 30 years said, “We all work hard, but nobody works as hard as the Sandman” at the event.
Jennifer Aniston, Chris Rock, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore and Conan O’Brien were just few of the comedians and celebrities that paid tribute to the Brooklyn native. The awards night was full of compliments and jokes that poked fun at Sandler.
Former roommate and director Judd Apatow recalls Sandler’s early assurance. Apatow said:
“The moment you met him, you knew Adam was going to be a big star, And so did Adam.”
Sandler, holding the bronze Twain monument, remarked that one day it might be the weapon used to bash me in my sleep. Sandler, now 56 years old attended New York University to hone his comic skills before moving to Los Angeles to expand his career.
In 1990, he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live” and immediately became a household name.
After being let go from the program, he became a cinematic star appearing in over a dozen films that collectively made over $4 billion worldwide, including “Billy Madison,” “The Wedding Singer,” “The Longest Yard,” “Uncut Gems,” and “Hustle,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
He has a history of recasting pals in his films and writing humorous songs for them. Sandler discussed the popularity of unlucky characters in cinema in an interview with CBS’s Sunday Morning that aired in November.
Sandler said:
“Oh man, I always liked them growing up, I liked pulling for somebody who needed something. I relate to all different types of people, but I enjoy playing these guys who are struggling. I like that.”
