Season 1 of The Last of Us on HBO has concluded and the next season has begun filming. As a result of its overwhelming popularity, HBO has ordered a second season of the show, which will adapt the plot of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II.
As gamers are aware, the events of The Last of Us Part II take place five years after the events of the first game, prompting speculation as to whether or not Bella Ramsey will be replaced in the role of Ellie.
Executive producer and co-president of Naughty Dog Neil Druckmann allayed any fears at a press conference before the season finale by declaring that he and showrunner Craig Mazin intend to build Season 2 with Ramsey at the fore.
Mazin agreed with Druckman that Ramsey did a great job as Ellie, and he added, “[Ramsey19 ]’s now, which — by the way — is the age of Ellie in The Last of Us Part II.”
The second season’s format and plot are currently unknown. Given that Part II is “more than a season’s worth of television, for sure,” it’s possible that Mazin is alluding to the possibility of splitting the sequel into two seasons. Further, there are a variety of methods to present the non-linear narrative structure of Part II.

The first season also frequently deviated from the game’s plot, most notably by radically changing the romantic arc between Bill and Frank. To create similar expectations for Season 2, Mazin has said that some moments may be “radically different” from what gamers experienced in The Last of Us Part II.

While this season has been unique, so too will Season 2 be, according to Mazin. “It will be different, but the degree to which it varies. The outcome will stand on its own. It won’t be 100% faithful to the original game. With Bella’s help, Neil and I will be able to create the show we’ve always dreamed of.”
