Mercedes traded their former chief technical director to a sailing team, INEOS Team UK, in October 2021. This was after they made him CTO in April. So, Mike Elliot got the part starting with the next season.
In 2022, Mercedes’s W13 car had a big drop in performance. It only won one race and finished third in the standings, giving it no chance of winning the championship. Even so, it’s not said that Elliot is the only one to blame for the slump in 2022 since the project has been going on since 2020.
But with him in charge, things aren’t getting better either. Mercedes’s start to the 2023 season was just as bad, as it could only finish in the middle of the pack, and it looks like it will go the same way as its predecessor.
Mercedes’ Top Engineer Returns
According to Motorsport Italy, it seems that James Allison is back on the field and aiding Mercedes with the development of the W14. Apparently, he had input on the developments that will arrive at Imola.

So, giving the command back to the person whose work on the team earned him a lot of praise. But he could only use the upgrades he chose after the Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna, set for the third week of May.
Parece que James Allison voltou à ativa na Mercedes: o Chefe de Operações Técnicas teria colocado a mão nas atualizações que deverão chegar a Imola e que são aprovadas por Riccardo Musconi.

Will It Solve Anything?
Fans would happily see Allison back at Mercedes, where she had a perfect record. But it could still turn out to be bad for them this season.
Except for porpoising, the W14 car has many of the same problems as its predecessor, the W13. So, it would be hard to turn it into a car that could win a championship soon enough.
With Allison’s skill, Mercedes might pick up a lot of speed by the end of the year and have a good finish to the season. But his job could be kept if the goals for the next few years were clear.
