Brian DeQuincey Newman was 40 years old when he passed away on 1 Feb 2023. Friends said he died of a heart attack caused by a blood clot.
Brian, the great-nephew of Rev. I. DeQuincey Newman, a civil rights leader, was elected to the Columbia City Council at the age of 30. He also led the Central Midlands Regional Transport Authority and worked as an assistant solicitor for the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
Tameika Isaac Devine, a friend and former council member in Atlanta, said he was working on development projects before his unexpected death. She claimed he was happy since he was doing things his own way.
According to Devine, Newman’s legacy extends well beyond his achievements.
“He had so many possibilities, was so intelligent, and didn’t limit himself to one area or another but just looked at where he could give back,” Devine added.

A close friend of his, State Representative Todd Rutherford, admired that altruistic, caring nature as well.
“He was the kind of person that if he met you, you were his friend, and if you were his friend, you were his family, and that’s how he treated everybody,” Rutherford said.
One thing he hopes people take away from Newman’s passing is the realization that tomorrow is never certain.
“One of the most common things I remember Brian saying was ‘YOLO’ [You Only Live Once]. He lived every day like it was his last, and he believed that you should as well,” said Rutherford with a smile.
Brian D. Newman’s funeral preparations are complete. A preview is scheduled for Monday morning at 10 a.m. After the wake, at 11 a.m., his funeral will be held at the Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia.
